Erik Rothenstein & ansambel SO36
This project is part of my journey, or rather. searching for new sounds, sonority, a different way of composition and overall approach to music than I have had so far. It is a symbiosis of musicians and composers of several musical styles with an effort to create a concept of „sound“ that would reflect the past and look to the future…. (Erik Rothenstein)
The group brings together classical musicians (a string quartet led by Boris Bohó, concertmaster and head of the cello group of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra) and a combo composed by saxophonist Erik Rothenstein (saxophone, piano, guitar + sounds & electronics). The ensemble wants to present itself with an unconventional sound, builds on the connection of players from different musical backgrounds and interprets composed original music with elements of improvisation. It collaborates with contemporary composers from the fields of jazz and classical music.
In November 2020, the ensemble released its debut album, Black Swan (Bebe rebe 2020). The compositions were written by younger and middle-generation composers Michal Stahl, Lucia Papanetzová and Vlado Šarišský, who have written for the ensemble in the past. We are very happy that the „seasoned skirmisher“ Egon Krak also wrote his first work for us.
Nassim Micholas Thaleb wrote the book Black Swan, in which he writes about the emergence of an unlikely event. He called it a black swan after the belief of the inhabitants of the „old world“ that all swans are white. The album responds to the situation surrounding the pandemic and tries to respond to it through artistic form. Is this event a black swan? Thaleb points out that the Covid crisis was predictable and governments are putting out a fire that could have been averted with millions in subsidies …..
ANSAMBEL SO36 first presented itself to the public with the project Gershwin Reloaded (Orfeus Festival 2018), which commemorated the 120th anniversary of George Gershwin’s birth. COMPOSERS: Lucia Papanetzová, Michal Stahl, Luboš Šrámek, Erik Rothenstein

George Gershwin is one of the great composers of the USA. He worked in the field of both classical and popular music. In addition to classical works, he also composed for Broadway and his compositions have also become established as jazz standards. He is considered the most important protagonist of the so-called symphonic jazz. The Gershwin reloaded project attempts to build on this foundation. Classical music and jazz have many commonalities, which are clearly noticeable in Gershwin’s music.
KONCEPCIA
The band interprets composed written music (arrangements of Gershwin compositions as well as original compositions) by Erik Rothenstein, Ľuboš Šrámek and Lucie Papanatzová. It plays to a pre-prepared background of beats, grooves and also uses improvisation. The musicians have the space to express themselves based on a graphic score, jazz solos stemming from swing and be-bop and free improvisation with pre-agreed harmonic-rhythmic structures. The project focuses on common intersections between classical and jazz music using modern technologies in the creation of the musical process. One of the benefits of the project is also to explore the interaction between musicians of different backgrounds with the intention of enriching the work and the various „layers“ of musical tradition and music making.
