The saxophone is not a frequently used instrument in classical music, but its sound is certainly a very interesting partner for its older „colleagues“. Rediscovering the already explored and exploring the undiscovered is in this context the main idea of musicians Erik Rothenstein and Zita Slavíčková within the Lento Ad Astra group.

Lento Ad Astra history

The Lento Ad Astra ensemble was formed in June 2011, when pianist Zita Slavíčková and saxophonist Erik Rothenstein decided to use their previous musical experience and try to perform several concerts together.

They initially focused on classical repertoire for alto saxophone, or rather transcriptions for this instrument. Gradually, however, they began to interpret literature mainly for baritone saxophone.

This chamber ensemble brings a new concept and freshness while maintaining high interpretative quality. Improvisation and stylish arrangement of songs for the needs of the group also find their place.

The ensemble collaborates with various guests. Contemporary Slovak composers Viliam Gräffinger and Ľuboš Bernáth have written original compositions on its behalf and have also adapted several compositions by old masters for the ensemble’s concert needs. The ensemble recorded its profile album, Playing Chess with Mr. Bach, in 2013.
